Midnight Luminescence: Capturing the Lunar Surface in Port Elizabeth

moon photo maryke blom art black frame

The clear skies over Port Elizabeth last night provided a perfect opportunity to capture the moon in great detail. The result of that session is a new addition to the digital collection: Midnight Luminescence.

The Story Behind the Shot

There is a specific kind of quiet that settles over the coast after the city noise fades.

Standing under the vast Eastern Cape sky, I looked up at the moon and felt a profound moment of gratitude. In that moment, I found myself wishing I had my painting gear on hand to capture the scene on canvas.

However, my creative process has been forced into a new direction. The moving company I hired for my relocation—Belo Holdings, otherwise known as Load A Lot—has essentially done me in.

After a long ordeal involving deceptive updates and tracking my stolen items while they were still in transit, I was left with a criminal case, reports filed with the NCC and CGSO, and only the bare minimum of my belongings.

Without my traditional brushes, paints, or the comforts of my previous studio, I have turned to my camera phone and digital design tools to rebuild my creative world from the ground up.

Finding Meaning in the Full Moon

In many spiritual traditions, a full moon is a powerful symbol of completion and illumination. It is seen as a cosmic spotlight that reveals truths and provides the clarity needed to close old chapters.

Spiritually, this phase represents a time to release what no longer serves you—making it a fitting symbol for my current journey of letting go of the past and embracing a forced, yet resilient, fresh start.

Standing under its light, I realised that even when we are stripped down to the basics, there is a fullness available to us if we choose to see it.

This photograph was born from that necessity—a chance to document the ancient beauty that looks down on us every night, even when everything else feels uncertain.

Every purchase of this print is more than just an art sale; it is a direct contribution that allows me to help myself find my footing again.
